Real Estate Finance

The real estate concentration gives a broad background in all aspects of the real estate industry. The concentration gives specialized skill sets for students wishing to work in real estate finance and development.  Earlier Students have taken jobs in real estate investment, finance, development, consulting, investment banking, corporate real estate, and in most other fields within the real estate industry.

The required courses focus on

  • the economics of real estate development and investment;
  • the pricing/valuation and trading of residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities (MBS);
  • the workings of real estate primary and secondary markets;
  • the economic analysis of cities, and touches on a broad range of topics, such as housing, transportation, land use, the cost and benefit of cities and urbanization.

The following are the required courses:

BUS 434 Real Estate Finance 4
BUS 435 Real Estate Investment 4
BUS 439 Fixed-Income Securities Market 4
ECON 434 Urban Economics 4

While the required course focuses on real estate finance, the electives allow students to explore non-financial issues.  In this sense, the real estate curriculum is cross-collaborative:  the students interact with students from Architecture, Construction, City and Regional Planning along with finance and accounting students from the business school. More information about the curriculum can be found at Real Estate Catalog

The students can also take part in the following competitions featuring Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” philosophy:
