Entrepreneurship Learn by Doing Projects
Through Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy, the Orfalea College of Business strives to incorporate opportunities for experiential learning in education. Here are some of the Learn by Doing opportunities within the Entrepreneurship Area.
Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship Senior Project
The interdisciplinary entrepreneurship senior project provides real world, hands on learning on what it’s like to start a company and develop a first product. This practical class/lab is designed as experiential learning with the pressures and demands of a real world startup. Students from the College of Engineering and Orfalea College of Business work as a team to develop a validated business model through customer and prototype development, and then are tasked with developing high fidelity product designs and products based on this business model.

Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Cal Poly’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) is a campus-wide center aimed at inspiring entrepreneurial skills and tactics across all students and faculty. Its programs encourage students to get involved from their first day on campus. CIE’s resources enable students to start their own businesses, innovate new products, and explore creative ideas.
The Hatchery is an on-campus program that fosters entrepreneurship initiatives among the student body. Through the combination of mentorship, weekly workshops, startup assignments, and an array of other activities and events, students gain hands-on experience in launching a company. They also develop essential entrepreneurial skills in communication, goal setting and leadership. The program is open for all Cal Poly students interested in learning how to take a business from idea generation to launch.

The Accelerator draws from a diverse alumni pool of mentors and speakers in the startup world. Throughout the program, companies develop their business model, learn how to operate a business, and practice telling their story to pitch their company. In addition to hands-on mentorship and weekly workshops, companies in the Accelerator program have access to $10,000 in seed funding to start building their business.

At the conclusion of each Accelerator program, a select group of companies are invited to remain at the SLO HotHouse for this 24-month program to continue developing their business while utilizing all of the resources of the SLO HotHouse: office space, internet, mentorship, conference rooms and an invaluable peer network. The programming of the Incubator includes monthly Peer Roundtable Discussions, an Incubator Advisory Board, networking opportunities, and exclusive access to various entrepreneurial events in the community.
