Cal Poly’s new entrepreneurship minor, open to students from all colleges, will allow you to develop the entrepreneurial mindset and skill set necessary for success in today’s economy. The program is a carefully chosen selection of courses from across the campus leading to a balanced and interdisciplinary approach. As a student in this minor, you will acquire the tools, develop the skills, and cultivate the mindset of an entrepreneur so that you may create economic and social value in any discipline.
The minor is designed with a limited number of prerequisites for courses*. As seen below, there are three required courses comprising a total of 12 units, and then students may choose from a variety of electives in their college and GE to gain the additional 12 units necessary.
How to Apply
Preference will be given to students with strong academic performance and established connections to the innovation and entrepreneurship programs on campus. For example, students working in the Hatchery, active in Cal Poly Entrepreneurs, living in Cal Poly lofts, etc., will be considered first for admission. Students who have already taken BUS 310 will be given preference.
In order to be considered for the minor, you will need to complete the online application linked below. Your application will be reviewed and you will be emailed next steps.
- The Entrepreneurship Minor is open to all majors except business administration and economics students.
- The minor must be completed BEFORE or at the SAME TIME as your major.
- 24 units are required to complete the minor.
- A minimum 2.0 GPA is required in all units counted for completion of the minor
- At least one-half of the minor units must be upper division courses.
- A minimum of one-half of the coursework must be completed in residence.
Who should take this minor?
This program is open to all students outside the business administration and economics majors. The program can benefit students studying almost any subject at Cal Poly. Engineering students, agribusiness students, and liberal arts students are particularly well positioned to embrace the skills and best practices central to the program. All eligible students are encouraged to apply!
What kind of careers will this minor support?
Earning a minor in entrepreneurship will sharpen skills needed for a variety of careers. Those graduating with a minor may go on to found their own startup, design or improve upon a new product, or lead a small business. Those graduates pursuing a corporate position will also benefit from the program by infusing an innovative spirit into their roles or relating to clients in the startup space.
