How do I make the most of drop-in tutoring?

Drop-In Tutoring is similar to a professor’s office hours and you can get quick answers for projects, homework, or class material.

Individual Appointments

During an individual appointment, you can get one-on-one support to address serious academic challenges in a particular subject area. Upon request, Tutors can provide you with supplemental worksheets, practice problems, and additional resources to strengthen your learning.

Group Appointments

During a group appointment, you and up to 4 of your friends or classmates can receive guidance with challenging homework problems and receive assistance with troubling course topics. Upon request, Tutors can provide you with supplemental worksheets, practice problems, and additional resources to strengthen your learning.

Cancellation Policy 

If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment, please give the tutor a 24-hour notice.

Position Description

Peer Tutors facilitate student learning in a specified subject-area in group or one-to-one settings. Peer Tutors assist students in improving their academic achievement by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and providing useful study skills. Additionally, peer tutors serve as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful independent learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing text, reviewing test questions, or working on solutions to problems.

Position Requirements

These criteria must be met before applying for a Peer Tutor position:

  • OCOB Undergraduate/Graduate student in good academic standing
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher
  • Received a letter grade of an A in the subject of interest
  • Open availability for training, professional development and meetings
  • Excellent communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills
  • Responsible, punctual, and professional

Note: Ask the instructor of record to write you a letter of recommendation for the subject(s) you wish to tutor. Have the instructor of record provide you the PDF file of the letter of recommendation to be submitted through the Peer Tutor Application. The letter should contain the following information: It must address your participation in class, attendance, student responsibility, communication skills, peer interaction, grade in the course(s), and why the professor thinks you would be a very good to great tutor.

Do you have to pay to come to tutoring?

No, the tutoring program is FREE for ALL students to utilize.

Who facilitates Peer Tutoring?

All Peer Tutors are current Orfalea College of Business students and are able to provide you with extensive support in adapting to study skills, developing learning strategies and approaches, and strengthening your understanding of course content. Each Tutor offers 4 hours of Drop-In Tutoring per week and is available for 30 minute or 45 minute appointments.

How do I schedule a one-on-one appointment?

To schedule an appointment please click the green appointment button at the top of this page or visit a Peer Tutor during drop-in. Tutors can meet with students between 8AM – 8PM, Monday through Thursday, depending on availability.

How many people can participate in group appointments?

Students can schedule an appointment with up to 4 friends, so 5 students total.

Do you get units for attending Orfalea Tutoring?

There are some Supplemental Workshops on campus for which you can receive credit, but you will not receive units for attending the tutoring provided by the Orfalea Tutoring Program. Additionally, attendance is not required for Drop-In Tutoring—students can attend regularly or periodically. Drop-In Tutoring is designed to be accessible and available for students, depending on their needs throughout the quarter.

Where is Drop-In Tutoring held?

Drop-In Tutoring is held in the newly-renovated computer lab on the 3rd floor. The tutoring spaces are marked as “Space 1,” “Space 2,” and “Space 3.” There are schedules posted to indicate what tutoring is in what space. Tutors are not permitted to meet with students off-campus.
