Cal Poly Accounting Club Expands Events, Recruiting and Leadership Opportunities

7-CPAC headerCal Poly Accounting Club Continues to Grow

The 2015-16 academic year has already set off to a strong start for the Cal Poly Accounting Club (CPAC), with membership doubling from 144 to more than 300 students. The club hosted a successful Fall Symposium in early October, giving students of all ages a chance to connect with the Big Four accounting firms as well as other small and medium-sized companies. This year’s event also included a panel discussion about recruiting moderated by Dean Scott Dawson.

The day after Fall Symposium, CPAC hosted the first-ever OCOB Olympics, which brought together students, faculty, and professionals from 13 different accounting firms for an afternoon of games and casual networking. It provided a friendly environment for students and professionals to form relationships while raising money for a great cause, the Alzheimer’s Association.

CPAC also hosted its annual Careers in Accounting Day, an event geared toward underclassmen as they explore potential job and internship opportunities. In addition to a recruiting fair, the day featured a panel discussion from industry veterans, including several Cal Poly alumni, about what it’s like to work for firms, private companies and government agencies. More than 300 students attended and 37 companies recruited at the event — the most attendance in CPAC history.

Looking ahead, CPAC president Jonathan Peck says they have a number of new events to enrich professional development for the club’s members, including industry tours at LinkedIn, an internship panel with upper-division students, and an alumni panel with graduates across industries.

8-CPAC insertCPAC is also encouraging their alumni to mentor  Orfalea College of Business students. The college is building new opportunities for alumni to mentor locally in San Luis Obispo and remotely via Skype.

CPAC will also be hosting its annual Day in the Park event on Saturday, May 14, 2016 on O’Neill Green. The event is a chance to connect past and present accounting students over a fun, casual afternoon of food and recreational activities. Although Day in the Park is not a recruiting event, more than 100 industry professionals and recruiters will be attending to interact with students in a friendly, conversational environment.

Later that day, the Cal Poly Accounting Area will host its annual Spring Banquet where junior scholarships and senior accolades will be awarded. Students will be able to network with the firms who invest in the program. Any alumni who would like to attend the event should contact Sheri Boscaro sboscaro@calpoly.edu.

CPAC is also planning events to reunite past board members. Past CPAC leaders are encouraged to join the LinkedIn group dedicated to those events and help the group reconnect.
