Cal Poly Business Alumni to be Grand Marshals in Open House Parade

Cal Poly will host its annual Open House festivities April 16-18 in San Luis Obispo. Business alumni Michael Newton and Jose Sanchez of organic beverage company Guayaki will serve as grand marshals in the 2015 Open House parade on April 18. Newton is one of the original founders of Guayaki, which makes fair-trade Yerba Mate. Newton earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in finance in 1997. Sanchez, who serves as the Los Angeles-area manager for the company, graduated from Cal Poly in 2009 with a degree in business administration and a concentration in entrepreneurship.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of Grand Avenue and North Perimeter Road and travels north toward Via Carta, ending at Dexter Lawn. Seating is available along the route. A variety of new and traditional events will be featured at the 2015 Open House, including live music, a Kids’ Fair, tractor pull and academic demonstrations.

Orfalea College of Business events include a welcome from Dean Scott Dawson in the Rec Center and an information fair on O’Neill Green Friday, April 17. Visitors can meet the college’s faculty and learn about its unique approach to experiential business education. The college will offer tours and demonstrations from staff, clubs and students within each of its concentrations throughout the day.

Cal Poly’s industrial technology and packaging students also plan to participate in the College of Architecture & Environmental Design’s Design Village in Poly Canyon on April 17-19. This year’s theme, “clockwork,” will come to life using a corrugated cardboard structure. For more information on Design Village, visit www.designvillage.wix.com/designvillage.

New and prospective students are encouraged to include the Orfalea College of Business’ “Learn by Doing” session on Saturday April 18 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Building 03, Room 213. Presentations will offer students insight into what areas of study interest them by showcasing current student projects and experiences.
