On Friday, October 19, twenty students from the Cal Poly American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter, led by Faculty Advisor Lisa Simon, travelled to San Francisco for their annual Fall Corporate Tour, during which they visited the facilities of LinkedIn, Salesforce and WeWork. On each tour, the students networked with Cal Poly alumni in the companies’ marketing and sales departments, who spoke about their positions and shared wisdom on how to successfully enter the workforce.
Corporate tours and networking opportunities like these inspire students to dream big, fill them with encouragement and provide them practical steps toward success in the marketing industry. One student stated, “One of the greatest takeaways was when Kevin Krantz from LinkedIn spoke about the many job opportunities currently available and the importance of taking risks. As a fourth-year student about to enter the workforce, his reassuring words were exactly what I needed to hear to give me the confidence when applying and interviewing for jobs.” Other students echoed the sentiment, and added that the tours inspired them to step out of their comfort zones.
But conversation on the tours went beyond career advice. Students also got to see each company’s mission and values in action, prompting thoughtful reflection and comparison to their own core values. “To see that my own personal mission lined up with the companies’ increased my curiosity as to what other opportunities might be out there,” one AMA member said.
This person-organization fit is immensely important for students to consider as they prepare for the job search. Experiencing company culture first-hand helps them visualize what it would be like to work there and better understand what they’re looking for in an employer.
Students found the tours so fulfilling that they’re advising others to attend, saying “It was a privilege networking with Cal Poly Alumna and I highly encourage other students to jump on the next corporate tour.”
That opportunity will be coming soon. AMA will take a tour in winter quarter as well, where students will have another opportunity to visit and network with industry-leading companies.
