What is the Sales Minor?
With the 2019-2021 catalog, the Orfalea College of Business will offer a Sales Minor. Consisting of three required and four elective classes, the minor will help students:
- Develop strong presentation skills and confidence
- Demonstrate skills with sales technology tools
- Practice hands-on sales skills
- Create important career building connections
- Prepare for prime sales internships and job opportunities
Why are we starting a Sales Minor?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the employment of sales and related occupations is projected to grow five percent from 2014 to 2024, which will result in about 778,000 new jobs.
Based on a survey sent to Cal Poly department chairs and students, there was overwhelming support for a Sales Minor. With the growth in career opportunities, corporate partner interest, and support from the Cal Poly community, the Orfalea College of Business created this Sales Minor.
What is the application process?
Preference will be given to students with strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in a possible sales career. Students with current sales experience and sales career goals will be considered first for admission.
In order to be considered for the minor, student need to complete the online application linked below and email your resume to Prof. Danielle Epstein at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your application will be reviewed and invited students will meet with Sales Minor Advisor Prof. Danielle Epstein.
What are the requirements for the Sales Minor?
- The Sales Minor is open to all majors.
- At least one-half of the minor units must be upper division courses
- A minimum of one-half of the coursework must be completed in residence.
- Minor must be completed BEFORE or at the SAME TIME as the Major.
- 28 units are required to complete the Minor.
- After admission to the Minor, students MUST maintain a 2.0 GPA in the Minor courses or be subject to dismissal from the Minor.
What is the curriculum?
Sales Minor students will complete 28 units, including three required and four elective classes. The required courses are: BUS 347 – Professional Selling Skills; BUS 348 – Technology-based Professional Sales; and BUS 466 – Sales Practicum. Who should take this minor?
Through the sales minor, students learn how to build and maintain business relationships, sell, manage, and lead. Students develop important career building connections through mentors, internships and a practicum to receive the knowledge and experience necessary to succeed in their career. The program is open to all Cal Poly undergraduate majors.
What kind of careers will this minor support?
Careers in sales are projected to grow by five percent from 2014 to 2024, creating 778,000 new jobs. General job possibilities include sales associates, sales representatives, sales managers, account executives, sales operations.
