Larry Spiegel

Background:

Having lived through the space race and energy crisis, Larry decided to pursue a degree in engineering specializing in alternative energy. Larry had chosen Cal Poly due to its diversified Engineering curriculum as well as its reputation; however, he started his education at Butte College in Oroville, CA with the intent of one day transferring. At Butte, he was able to study diverse fields such as engineering graphics, surveying, horticulture, construction and heavy-equipment. The indulgence in such tangents allowed the opportunity to experience fields that otherwise would have taken years of employment. After graduating from Cal Poly in Mechanical Engineering emphasizing active and passive solar design, Larry found few jobs in alternative energy, so fate took him into machine design. Good fortune found him professional employment in San Luis Obispo, which allowed a return to Cal Poly for his Master’s degree, and now to instruct. His varied background influences his day to day work, including introducing a civil engineering tool into a materials experiment, and applying solar thermal analysis to polishing semiconductor wafers. He’s been fortunate to have a hand in machines in varied markets all over the country and world, from the biggest including China and Russia to the smallest, Lichtenstein. If one looks out the window of an airplane, turns on an LED light, uses a laptop, or looks through a telescope, it is possible that it was made, in part, to machinery he helped design right here in SLO. He now looks forward to helping today’s students design the future.
