Professor of Accounting

Herbert Hunt

Dr. Hunt is currently a Professor of Accounting who teaches income tax law and financial accounting. Professor Hunt received his BA and MBA degrees from the University of Vermont, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado where he minored in tax law through the University of Colorado Law School.  He also holds an inactive CPA license from the state of Colorado.

Prior to joining the Faculty at Cal Poly in September 2013, Professor Hunt held faculty positions at the University of Colorado, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Vermont and California State University, Long Beach.

Professor Hunt’s teaching interests are in the areas of financial accounting, management accounting, income tax law and environmental accounting. In addition to teaching numerous courses in these areas over the past 35 years at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, he taught in the Honor’s Program at Penn State University and has chaired several honors’ theses at Penn State and Cal State, Long Beach. He also served on two dissertation committees at Penn State and recently served as an outside reader for an environmental accounting dissertation written by a PhD candidate in India. While on the Faculty of the University of Vermont, he worked closely with Faculty from the School of Natural Resources to develop cross-disciplinary minors in environmental management for natural resource students and in environmental science for business administration students.

Professor Hunt’s research interests include the economic determinants/consequences of accounting choices, issues related to worker pensions, financial analysts’ behavior and various topics related to accounting for the environment.  He has published over two dozen articles in several leading academic and professional journals including Journal of Accounting ResearchJournal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Accounting, Organizations and SocietyAbacus, Accounting PerspectivesDecision SciencesAdvances in TaxationJournal of Cost Management, Advances in Environmental Accounting & Management, Issues in Accounting Education, Labor Law Journal and Business Horizons. In addition to his journal publications, he has made 26 presentations at professional meetings and conferences, both in the U.S. and in Europe. Professor Hunt has served on the editorial review board of The Accounting Review, one of the elite academic journals in accounting and has done extensive reviewing for many other top accounting and business journals. In 1995, he was recognized in a published article as one of the “most influential accounting researchers” in the U.S. based on citations to his work in the top accounting journals. Professor Hunt is an avid cyclist and runner and enjoys travel and fly fishing.
