David Kocsis

Dave Kocsis is a full-time lecturer in the Management area of the Orfalea College of Business at Cal Poly. He recently joined the faculty at Cal Poly after spending the past four years in the doctoral program in information systems at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).

Kocsis spent more than 15 years at First Data, working in a variety of IT and management roles for this Fortune 500 company. He started as an intern, progressing to a technical associate, LAN administrator, desktop engineer, and finally a distributed systems engineer. His roles included software, hardware and network troubleshooting, IT security, group policies, and project management, to name a few. He worked on and managed dozens of IT projects important to user experience, information security, and operations for 30,000 users at this financial services company.

In addition to his industry experience, Kocsis brings to Cal Poly a wealth of research knowledge on collaboration principles and technologies from both theory and practice. During his time at UNO, Kocsis worked with large companies to improve collaboration, business processes, and setting standards and guidelines for emerging technologies. Kocsis worked with professors and other graduate students to design, develop, and implement a virtual learning platform to deliver online leadership training to emerging leaders in rural Nebraska.

Kocsis’ research interests extend beyond traditional collaboration, as he is interested in the next era of collaboration: crowdsourcing. His crowdsourcing publications include applying traditional collaboration principles to large groups, ethics in crowdsourcing, and future research directions in crowdsourcing. His future research will incorporate the broad area of business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) and their use in crowdsourcing, as well as how BI&A can improve organizational processes and decision making.

Two desires led Kocsis back to academia. First, he wanted to teach, and has found a wonderful fit here at Cal Poly. Second, he wanted to learn about theory and principles, and applying those to improve practice.
