Carol Janssen

Carol Janssen is a lecturer for the Orfalea College of Business in the Accounting and Law area. As a lawyer for nearly three decades, she brings her personal knowledge and passion for the law to students in the Legal Responsibilities of Business and Governmental and Social Influences on Business courses. Carol enjoys helping students understand and minimize their legal risks as they enter the business world.

As a civil litigation attorney practicing in both Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo counties, Carol represented municipalities, businesses, and individuals in a variety of matters with an emphasis in employment law. Admitted to practice in California and various federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court, she rapidly gained jury trial and appellate advocacy experience with several published opinions in the California Court of Appeal and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

After graduating cum laude from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication, Carol attended Southwestern University School of Law receiving her Juris Doctorate degree with honors. In law school, she was awarded the Wildman merit scholarship, received recognition for her legal research and writing, served on the Board of Governors for the Moot Court Honors Program and received American Jurisprudence awards in Torts and Conflict of Laws.

She began her teaching career at Cuesta College in 2009 and became a lecturer at CalPoly in 2014. Believing the best teachers are perpetual students, she recently completed Public Policy graduate courses with a research focus on economic justice. In her spare time, Carol enjoys traveling, spoiling her dogs, watching hockey, and teaching fitness classes.
