What classes will I be taking my first year?
Cal Poly students begin taking major classes their first year. We try to get Orfalea College of Business students into major courses their first quarter. Freshmen should also be taking their support courses their first year, which is (depending on the major) made up of Economics, Statistics, Math and Science courses. General Education courses usually include English, Communications, Political Science, Psychology, and others.
How many major/support classes should I take each quarter?
A balanced schedule usually entails two major or support classes, and then two general education classes. At a minimum, it is important to take at least one major or support course each quarter to stay on track to graduate in four years.
How big will my classes be?
Class sizes vary anywhere from 20-60, and there are a few lower division classes that have larger lectures of 200 people. Most business classes have approximately 40-60 students, making it very manageable for individuals to be able to talk to professors in office hours.
How do I get help planning my schedule once I am at Cal Poly?
Here at the Orfalea College of Business, our Advising Center is based on a Peer Advising model. Current students are hired and highly trained to help students pick classes and design schedules to work towards graduation in four years or less. Appointments are scheduled with students throughout the year. We welcome walk-in questions along with phone calls or emails whenever a student has a question regarding classes or any other university policy.
How many students get placed into jobs right out of college?
Job placement varies from concentration to concentration. After graduation, students complete a survey reporting their currently employer information. Should I get a MAC or a PC?
This choice is completely up to the student’s preference. If a student did in fact need a certain type of computer for a class there are both MACs and PCs in the Kennedy Library on campus for the student’s use.
