There are various means for students to gain knowledge about career opportunities. We encourage students to participate in as many of these as possible:
CPAC - Cal Poly Accounting Club
With meetings each Tuesday from 11:00 a.m.-Noon, most feature
a speaker on a subject of interest to students: requirements to
become certified (CPA, CMA, CFA) opportunities in government,
career paths in large CPA firms, etc. The club handles publicity
and signups for groups of the networking opportunities discussed
below. It also sponsors a number of social events throughout the
year. All students are encouraged to join to gain career information
and have the opportunity to play a leadership role in one of the
University's largest clubs.
IMA - Institute of Management Accountants Club
A student IMA Chapter was formed during the Summer of 1995 to
provide students with information about career opportunities in
Industry and information about the CMA and CFM examinations. The
IMA approaches students from a seminar approach by inviting CEO's
and CFO's from the Central Coast Area to share their valuable
experiences.
Fall Symposium and Picnic
CPAC sponsors an Annual Symposium for all companies that recruit
Accounting graduates on campus. A variety of large corporations,
governmental agencies and CPA firms send representatives.
The event is open to all graduating seniors to meet and discuss
concerns and opportunites with recruiters prior to the interviewing
process.
The day following the Symposium, recruiters are invited to a golf
tournament and picnic that is open to all Accounting students.
Student Nights
Both the Central Coast Chapter of The California Society of CPAs
and the local Institute of Management Accountants sponsor a student
night. Students have an opportunity to attend a dinner meeting,
meet local accountants and learn about career opportunities in
CPA firms and Industry.
Winter and Spring Socials, Tours
During the Winter and Spring Quarters some of the firms that recruit
at Cal Poly sponsor tours of their offices or socials in the San
Luis Obispo area. The purpose of these events is for Juniors to
get to meet personnel from the Firms and gain an understanding
of the differences and similarities between the various firms
that recruit on campus.
Spring Alumni and Awards Banquet
The Accounting Area and CPAC hold a banquet during May attended
by approximately 125 alumni and friends of the department, as
well as about 100 students and faculty. Most attendees are recent
graduates who can share their post-graduation experiences and
give insights about opportunities in a wide variety of career
paths.
