Corporate Fraud Expert Aaron Beam to Speak at Cal Poly May 18

Aaron BeamFormer HealthSouth Corp. CFO Aaron Beam will speak at Cal Poly about fraud and stock manipulation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Business Building (No. 03), Room 213. Free pizza will be available for all attendees.

Beam, who turned himself in for accounting fraud, will present “Why Good People Sometimes Do Bad Things.” The talk explores the ethical challenges he faced during his career. It focuses on the importance of an ethics-first approach in business, identifying the early warning signs of trouble, and candidly discussing the mistakes he made in the past.

Beam was a co-founder of HealthSouth Corp and its first CFO. After leaving the company, he pled guilty for his role in a $2 billion fraud scandal committed during the 1990s. He spent three months in federal prison and lost his Certified Public Accounting credentials.

Now Beam spends his time speaking about his experiences, hoping others learn from his mistakes and leadership failures.

The talk is free and open to the public. Those planning to attend are asked to reserve a space online at http://bit.ly/CPAaronBeam.

The talk is sponsored by the Cal Poly Accounting Club and Cal Poly’s chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
