Cal Poly LITC Granted $87,000 from the Taxpayer Advocate Service

Tax CourtThe Cal Poly Low Income Taxpayer Clinic is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $87,000 grant from the Taxpayer Advocate Service for 2015. This is an increase from the $85,000 it received in 2014. With this increased funding, the Cal Poly LITC will continue to provide free tax controversy representation in addition to educating individuals who speak English as a second language (ESL) about their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers. The 2015 grant award will be divided up with $77,000 toward controversy work and $10,000 allocated toward ESL work. This funding is crucial to the operation and maintenance of the LITC as all services offered at the Cal Poly LITC are provided free of charge.

Since its inception in 2010, demand for the LITC’s services has increased dramatically. The clinic began with just one student accountant and faculty member assisting clients; today 21 students work in the LITC handling 66 client cases. The LITC assists clients in San Luis Obispo, northern Santa Barbara, and southern Monterey counties.
