Cal Poly Senior Project Wins Packaging Industry Award

A two-part, display-ready asparagus shipper developed by two Cal Poly students in 2010 won the AmeriStar award from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), considered by industry professionals to be the most prestigious packaging competition awards in North America. More than 150 packages were submitted and judged on package innovation, sustainability, protection, economics, performance and marketing. Cal Poly Team Places Second in Regional Human Resource Games

A team of three Cal Poly undergraduates took second place at the recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Pac West Regional Case Competition at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Better known as the “HR Games,” the competition tasks students with presenting their analysis and action plans for a company experiencing a downsizing and presenting those ideas to a panel of senior-level human resource executives. Roll Global Vice Chair Lynda Resnick to Speak April 25 at Cal Poly

Cal Poly will host Lynda Resnick, vice chair of Roll Global, on Wednesday, April 25, as part of the Orfalea College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series. Roll Global is a privately held company based in Los Angeles with interests in agriculture and luxury brands, including Paso Robles-based Justin Vineyards and Winery. “A Conversation with Lynda Resnick” will be held from 2:10 to 3 p.m. in Harman Hall at the Performing Arts Center. Economics Professor Michael Marlow on Government and Obesity

Economics Professor Michael Marlow has shifted his focus in 2012, starting off the year with the publication of two papers detailing the effectiveness of government intervention in the fight against obesity in the United States. John C. Rogers III, Professor of Marketing, 1944-2012

Professor Emeritus of Marketing and former interim dean for the Orfalea College of Business, John Rogers, passed away on February 13, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Rogers served the Cal Poly community for 20 years, from 1986 until his retirement in 2006.  He had a passion for international travel and education, which will be commemorated by a scholarship fund to assist students interested in studying abroad. Steve Hamilton Explains the Disparity Between Wages and Increasing Prices

Professor of Economics Stephen Hamilton discussed the implications of rising food prices for consumers who haven’t seen an increase in wages in recent years. While current salaries can go further for non-food items (such as appliances and electronics) than they could a decade ago, many consumers still feel the pressure of higher prices for everyday purchases. Professor Chris Carr Visits Tunisia through Fulbright Specialists Program

Chris Carr, JD, Professor of Business Law and Public Policy for the Orfalea College of Business was one of 400 American faculty and professionals chosen in 2011 to travel abroad as part of the Fulbright Specialists Program, an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Designed to compliment the Fulbright Scholar program, Fulbright Specialists are awarded the opportunity to participate in short-term academic activities lasting from two to six weeks. Read more…

The Orfalea College of Business Low Income Taxpayers Clinic, a member of the California Central Coast Tax Coalition, held a press conference Thursday, January 12 to discuss the services offered by the LITC and the referral-network of coalition members. This year, the Orfalea College of Business recognized Patrick M. DeLong, B.S. Business Administration, as the honored alumnus for the college in Cal Poly’s annual Honored Alumni program. Fluor Corp. Vice President to Speak on Business Ethics Sept. 22 at Cal Poly

Wendy Hallgren, vice president of Corporate Compliance for Fluor Inc., will speak at Cal Poly on Thursday, Sept. 22, as part of the Orfalea College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series. Hallgren will present “Business Ethics: Doing the Right Thing Can Be a Competitive Advantage,” from 2:10 to 3:10 p.m. in the Spanos Theater. The event is free and open to the public. Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Helps Students Develop Startup Companies

Students from different colleges and majors at Cal Poly have come together as the first group to try out The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s Hot House – a program which gives students resources and space to develop and implement their own products and companies. Finance Students Find Out Results of Most Recent CFA Exam

Orfalea finance students, along with thousands of other finance professionals around the world, found out the results of the most recent Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam. The CFA Charter designation is the “gold standard” for finance professionals worldwide. Cal Poly students prepare to take their Level 1 and 2 exams as part of the CFA Challenge, a senior project created by Cyrus Ramezani, Finance Area chair in the Orfalea College of Business. The CFA Challenge is a prime example of Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing approach to education. Read more…

Orfalea MBA Students and Faculty Tour China

Students and faculty from the Orfalea College of Business MBA program recently returned from a 14-day Learn by Doing tour of China that included stops in the cities of Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. The excursion offered MBA students an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the global business environment and China’s influence on Western business models. An international trip to either China or India is the capstone of the Cal Poly MBA program. Read more…

James Buxbaum, Professor of Law, 1928-2011

Jim Buxbaum, retired professor of business law in the Orfalea College of Business passed away on July 15, 2011. Buxbaum became a professor at Cal Poly in 1978 and continued to teach at the college of business until his retirement in 1992. Friends describe Buxbaum as a very friendly and intelligent person. He was well read, enjoyed writing screenplays, and valued his friendships. Read more…

Eugene (Gene) O’Connor, Professor of Marketing, 1929-2011

Eugene (Gene) O’Connor, retired professor of marketing in the Orfalea College of Business, inspiring advisor, and cherished friend passed away on April 18, 2011. O’Connor had been a resident of San Luis Obispo since 1964 and loved his teaching position at Cal Poly. With his students and those around him, O’Connor also advocated good manners and behavior, correct use of language, and the idea that mediocrity was not an option. Read more…

Orfalea MBA Students Take “Learn by Doing” to LA

MBA students traveled to Los Angeles in mid-May for a two-day field trip where they learned about business and the California Economy. Organized by Orfalea College Professor Chris Carr and Orfalea College alumnus Bill Chillingworth (’78), the trip gave graduate students an opportunity to see their on-campus coursework reflected in the real world.
