Consulting & Research Interests

Dawn's work experience as a financial recruiter and her doctoral studies in organizational behavior have heightened her interest in helping people better manage their careers. To this end, her research and consulting interests center on careers and mentoring. Her research on "Relational Savvy", for example, suggests that rather than relying on a formal mentor to provide all of one's career needs, a person should proactively foster a network of "developers" who provide varying types of developmental support. Organizations should consider designing "Relational Savvy training interventions" that stimulate people's thinking about their existing mentoring networks and how they can better nurture responsive networks through their own efforts. She has designed a "Relational Savvy" instrument that is currently used to assess a person's "savvy."

Professional Experience

Dawn has nearly five years experience in two industries: recruiting and financial services. Prior to entering Boston University's doctoral program, she was employed as a financial recruiter based out of Boston and San Jose, California.

As a recruiter, Dawn collaborated with clients in diverse industries-e.g., software, food, retail, and financial services-to locate and hire employees for their respective accounting and finance departments. Likewise, Dawn consulted hundreds of job seekers on matters such as interviewing techniques, cover letter and resume writing, and salary negotiations. These experiences have given Dawn a unique vantage point into the hiring process within organizations. Each year of her employment, she doubled her yearly billings. Upon graduating from California State University at Chico, Dawn began her career in a management training program with Transamerica Financial Services. Her responsibilities included maintaining relationships with clients with existing personal, automobile, and mortgage loans, overseeing appropriate documentation on loans, and managing accounts receivable portfolio.
