Finance Major to Receive Prestigious Hearst Scholarship
Orfalea finance major Phong V. Dang is the 2009 California Polytechnic State University recipient of the prestigious William Randolph Hearst CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Dang was among 23 students selected by the California State University to receive the 2009/10 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement. The winners, one from each campus in the system, were honored by the trustees on Sept. 22 at the CSU Office of the Chancellor in Long Beach.
The award is among the highest forms of recognition for student achievement in the CSU. Hearst Scholars demonstrate superior academic achievements, community service, financial need and the ability to overcome adversity.
Dang transferred to Cal Poly in fall 2008 from Santa Rosa Junior College. He is working on a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in finance management. Dang plans to complete his degree in business, get career experience and then return to the university and obtain an MBA so he can pursue a career in finance.

Braggin’ Rights for the Grad Program
Last year, after returning from the Chindia Trip with the Grad program, Steve Munio took two weeks off then packed his bags for northern San Diego County where he started at ViaSat, Inc. According to Steve, “From the start, there were high expectations of me. The reputation of Cal Poly is strong here, due in no small part to the many successful alumni that work here now.”
Steve’s title is Supply Chain Agent and he is the focal point in supply chain for a business area that contributes about a third of ViaSat's ~$700 million revenue. Some of Steve’s big accomplishments have been leading a full-day $60 Million contract negotiation (and all the prep that went into it), achieving ~$8 million in cost savings for his programs in his first nine months with the company, which earned him the ViaSat Supply Chain Excellence Award (given to 2 people per quarter out of 75+ people in Operations). Steve says, “ViaSat has been an incredible company to work for and continuously challenges and develops me.”
