Cal Poly Professor Emeritus Receives 2009 Accounting Exemplar Award
Cal Poly Professor Emeritus Mary Beth Armstrong received the Accounting Exemplar Award for 2009 on August 2nd at a luncheon for the annual Public Interest Section Ethics Symposium.
The Public Interest Section Accounting Exemplar Award is given to either an accounting educator or an accounting practitioner who has made notable contributions to professionalism and ethics in accounting education and/or practice, by serving as a role model and/or by making significant contributions to the profession in a manner which serves the public interest.

Professor Armstrong began her career at Cal Poly in 1984 as an associate professor in the College of Business. She has held the titles of professor, associate dean, department head and currently, professor emeritus.
Previous winners of the Accounting Exemplar Award include Charles Bowsher, former Comptroller General of the U.S., who led the Government Accountability Office in addressing the savings and loan crisis; Arthur Levitt, the 25th and longest-serving chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Cynthia Cooper (Orfalea Distinguished Speaker on January 27, 2006), former vice president of Internal Audit at WorldCom, who, in 2002, led the effort to uncover the largest accounting fraud in U.S. history.

MBA and MS in Industrial Technology Students Study Tour to India and China
This past June, 32 Orfalea College of Business MBA and MS in Industrial Technology students, joined Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Chris Carr and Industrial Technology Associate Professor Jay Singh, in traveling to the People’s Republic of China and India to participate in a unique graduate business course focused on the study of business opportunities and business environments in two of the world’s most populous and up-and-coming economies.
Pictured L-R, Raquel Rusing (MBA grad), Kamal Vora (MBA student at MET in Mumbai) that accompanied the group, Mark Polydoris, (MBA grad), Jason Larocco (MBA/MS Engineering Management student), Oscar Merlin (MBA grad), Andre Ourthiague (MBA/MS Engineering Management student), Xiaofei Song (MBA grad)
As part of this experiential learning course students met executives, managers and workers, and visited the offices and factories of a number of small, medium and multinational firms, including, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Rockland Hospitals Ltd, Airtel, American Express Banking, Hutchinson 3 Global Services, Big Bazaar, MET Institute of Management, Best Buy, Subway, Sealed Air, Suzhou Industrial Park, Hip Fung Electronics, Carre Four and Siemens.
Trip participant and MBA, Mark Polydoris saw that “India is a country full of young, bright, charming people who can outsmart and outwork most of us here stateside. America is going to have to quickly learn how to respond to such a charismatic and capable workforce.”
Xiaofei Song, Cal Poly MBA and citizen of the People’s Republic of China accompanied her classmates and noted, “I enjoyed watching my classmates come to appreciate the vast cities of my country, the vibrant business and cultural opportunities available and the taste of real Chinese food. It was quite a culture shock for them and much more then they anticipated. Before this trip, a number of my classmates could not understand why I had no desire to remain and work in America. Now, after this experience, no explanation is necessary.”

Click, here to read Associate Dean, Chris Carr’s blog on the Chindia 2009 trip. According to Chris Carr, “By far our best trip and group yet. This year's students conducted themselves very well and made us proud. They were great ambassadors for the USA, Cal Poly and the Orfalea College of Business.”
Also, check out these student videos of the Chindia trip, from MS in IT student CeCe Reyes. There is one of China and one of India, and both are very well done. Thank you, Ce Ce!
