BusinessWeekEarlier this spring, BusinessWeek released its ranking of the top 100 undergraduate business programs, and the Orfalea College of Business is included this year at a rank of #70. This is the first year the Orfalea College of Business has been included in the Top 100 rankings since Business Week launched the feature in 2006. Cal Poly and UC Berkeley were the only public universities in California to make the list.

“We have an unusual depth and breadth of business education at Cal Poly,” said Dean Dave Christy. We offer a comprehensive curriculum, from accounting to packaging and logistics, with an emphasis on team project-based learning and intensive interaction with faculty. At graduation, our students are equipped with a remarkably high ability to perform on the job.”

“These rankings consider satisfaction by both recruiters and students. This confirms that our faculty members are well connected with the needs of business,” said Christy.

WE MISSED YOU LAST MONTH!

Please forgive us for not reporting to you last month. We didn’t forget you, but were quite busy with spring events around the university and the college of business, including . . .

Open House crowdOpen House 2009 was a huge success with close to 1,000 prospective students and their parents attending the Orfalea College of Business Welcome on Friday, April 17, 2009, (more than double the size from Open House 2008). After the University Welcome from President Baker, lunch and the Orfalea College Welcome at the Rec Center, the prospective students and their parents converged on the Orfalea College of Business breezeway to visit with student club organizations, enjoy tours of the college from student ambassadors and sit in on concentration/degree presentations from faculty and information sessions from the Advising Center throughout the afternoon.

Cal Poly estimated over 40,000 guests visited campus over the Open House 2009 weekend!

Our two Distinguished Speakers wowed audiences in Spanos Theater. Greg Jamison, President and CEO, San Jose Sharks, revealed how persistence pays off in the business of sports and entertainment. Our own Orfalea College alumna, Joanne Smith, Sr. Vice President, Delta Airlines, demonstrated how she managed to stay on her feet in the corporate world while battling personal and corporate change. Joanne was also a guest speaker at the Good Morning SLO Chamber Breakfast on Thursday morning.

IT Packaging Fair

The annual Industrial Technology Packaging Fair was held on April 30th on nearby Dexter Lawn and the surrounding grounds of the Orfalea College of Business. The attending students, staff, faculty and alums had a beautiful central coast day of sunshine for their celebration. Once again, the infamous Egg Drop (and we aren’t talking soup) took place in front of an anxiously waiting crowd.

Approximately 65 contestants from across campus participated, including students from College of Liberal Arts, Engineering and the Orfalea College of Business (Packaging).

Among the spectators were Industrial Technology Advisory Council members Scott Fleming, IT ‘78 (left) and Joan Passovoy, IT ’76. The IT and Packaging Advisory Council Board meetings are held in conjunction with the fair each year.

      Egg Deceleration Contest

  • Contestants design and build a shipping container that will prevent an uncooked egg (Grade-AA Large) from breaking when dropped from a height of 30 feet.
  • Precise dimensions must be followed and the maximum weight (including the egg), cannot exceed one pound.
  • No kits or pre-made designs allowed! This is serious business. Eggs are supplied at the contest, (no bringing in a ringer).
  • The egg must be undamaged after the drop. No cracks, (fissures, splits, breaks) on the surface and no internal fluids escaping from the shell.

The Egg Drop Contest determined three winners. Left to right, Peter Brown, VP Operations, Lansmont Corp. and chair of the Packaging Advisory Board, winners Kevin Whipp, John Biddle, William Lefever and I.T. Professor Jay Singh
