NEWS FROM CAL POLY'S ORFALEA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

National Intercollegiate Business Ethics Competition photo Four Orfalea College of Business graduate students won the overall prize for the National Intercollegiate Business Ethics Competition held at Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Ethics and Business in Los Angeles. Jessica Valpey (MBA), Sean Martin (MBA), Adrienne Lindsay (MBA), and Jim Erickson (MS in I&TS) competed against 24 teams (graduate and undergraduate), including teams from Loyola Marymount, New York University, Texas A&M, University of Southern California, University of Washington, Villanova and the US Naval Academy.
annual regional SIFE conference

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) earned Regional Champion status and won five special topic awards projects in the annual regional SIFE conference on April 5 in Long Beach. They will now advance to the 2006 SIFE U.S.A. National Exposition on May 21-23 in Kansas City, MO., where they will compete against other regional champion teams from across the country.  For more information about SIFE, please go to their campus website

MBA students Derek West, David Brown, Rebecca Deeter, Kin Lam, and Emile Davis and Industrial Technology graduate student Jonathan Linker brought back a third-place trophy from the 42 nd International Intercollegiate Business Strategy Competition in San Diego in April. The event attracted 30 teams from 22 universities in the US, Canada, Great Britain, and the Middle East.

Students Lauren Ralyea and James Manley won first place as a school at the Second Annual California Collegiate Sales Competition at CSU Sacramento on April 7. Beginning January 6, James, Lauren, and several other students learned selling skills from marketing faculty Brian Tietje and Lisa Simon

Students in Cal Poly’s Human Resources Management Association placed fourth at the Pac West Regional HR Games at the University of Hawaii – Manoa in April. Congratulations go to Kim Zechnich, David Gentry, and JenniferChambliss, and their advisor, Rebecca Ellis.

Dr. James McKenzie Dr. James McKenzie conducted a Teaching Enhancement Workshop for Orfalea College of Business faculty on Friday, April 7. The workshop included information on enhancing strategies to promote learning, enhancing the questioning power of business students, and improving classroom tactics and moves. Dr. McKenzie is an international consultant.
Cal Poly Wheelchair Foundation team The Cal Poly student chapter of the Wheelchair Foundation held their fifth annual benefit on April 1 st. This year’s team, pictured at left, has raised over $60,000 to send over 800 wheelchairs to Belize. The student chapter of the Wheelchair Foundation also received the Best Active Small Club award of $500 from the Interclub Council Pepsi Grant at Cal Poly. Congratulations on a job well-done team!
Honda Fit Marketing Challenge team Marketing students compete in the Honda Fit Marketing Challenge as part of their senior project against 18 schools throughout the country. The students created an agency called Unique Conception Partners to develop a full scale marketing campaign. As the project nears the end they have put themselves in the position to win the competition with a grand prize of $5,000, which will go to Cal Poly. More information
Richard Dutra and Ryan Enfantino Richard Dutra and Ryan Enfantino of the Atascadero Police Department were two of the 17 local law enforcement personnel who participated in Lezlie Labhard’s fiber identification workshop. Labhard conducted the workshop in the textiles laboratory to assist local law enforcement in crime scene investigation.
