Internships

Internships, summer jobs, and other experiences enable you to test out a career and develop marketable skills. An Internship is a short-term work experience in which you receive training and gain experience in a specific field or career area. An internship can be paid or unpaid and can vary in hours and length. It allows you to gain valuable exposure to the workplace, provides the opportunity for skill development, and gives you a competitive edge in the job search.

Finding an internship or summer job takes planning, organization, and persistence. It is important to start early, to allow yourself enough time to do everything you can to thoroughly research and pursue opportunities that interest you most.

Steps to Getting an Internship

1. Develop your internship goals

Spend some time thinking about your possible internship. Ask yourself why you want one, and when you want to take it. The clearer you are about what you want to gain from an internship, the more likely you are to have a successful internship experience. Useful questions are:

  • Why do I want an internship, what are my career goals?
  • What do I want to learn from an internship?
  • What sort of company or organization would enable me to learn those things?
  • Where do I want the internship to be situated?
  • How much time do I want to spend at the internship?
  • Will you consider both paid & nonpaid internships?
  • Do you want credit for the internship?
  • Be Focused! ~ This will help you in starting your internship search

2. Use Multiple Resources to Identify Internships

Once you have an idea of the sort of internship you want, use a variety of methods explore internship possibilities opportunities. View a breakdown of the resources available to you.

3. Perfect your Resume & Cover Letter

  • It must be perfect in order to be competitive for an internship position.

  • Cover Letter Guidelines
  • Get help from Career Services – Drop in hours 1-3pm every day for cover letter & resume reviews

4. Managing Your Internship Search

An internship search will require time, dedication, and resourcefulness. Here are some tips for managing your internship search:

  • Start early!
  • Be organized. Track all applications submissions, phone conversations, and employer contacts.
  • Follow-up with employers. If you haven’t heard back about 2 weeks after the application deadline, contact them to check in on your application.
  • Stay committed to your search as it may take time.
