The Advising Center Philosophy

Attending college gives students a chance to become independent, to choose which areas of study they want to pursue, to develop their abilities, and to take initiative. We give students the resources needed to successfully negotiate the curriculum they select. We empower our students to make educated decisions.

Areas of Speciality

  • Academic advising and schedule planning
  • Academic intervention / probation / disqualification advising
  • Interpretation of articulation agreements, curriculum sheets, flowcharts
  • Change of major information
  • College and University policies and procedures
  • G.E.B. requirements
  • Process student-related forms such as curriculum substitution, course withdrawal, course conflict, change of major, etc.

The Peer Advising Model

Have you ever heard the following saying: "If you give a person a fish you feed them for a day. If you teach a person how to fish you feed them for a lifetime?" The Advising Center is teaching students how to "feed themselves." Our new model requires students to become independent and use tools and information that we give them.

Peer advising sessions are an integral part of the new model; their qualifications stem from a great deal of highly individualized training. Peer Advisors take part in 1-2 quarter of highly specialized training to meet the needs of all business, economics, and industrial technology students. They update and review students' files before a walk-in or advising session and are prepared to answer any questions or concerns the students may have about the curriculum and/or policies. Peer Advisors have been thoroughly trained, have experience, and are qualified to advise students. Our three Academic Advisors are involved with direct supervision and specialty student concerns; their appointments involve change of major, career advice, and academic probation students.

The structure of the OCOB Advising Center is designed to accommodate the students more efficiently. Imagine being able plan your schedule each quarter with ease and being able to determine what courses and requirements you have left before graduation. The Peer Advisors will work with students to make this become a reality. All of the information needed to manage your academic progress is available; let the Advising Center help you find it.
