College Based Fee

How the Orfalea College of Business Uses College Based Fees

The CBF Advisory Committee for the Orfalea College of Business has made access to classes and student success the two overarching priorities for these funds.

Access to Classes:

Seventy-two percent of the CBF funds have been used to hire more permanent faculty for the business, economics, and industrial technology programs. Currently eleven of the college’s fifty-four full-time tenure-track faculty are employed because of the availability of CBF funds. These eleven faculty members represent every discipline within the Orfalea College of Business. An additional one percent of our CBF funds are committed to recruiting new faculty, and seven percent supplement the cost of providing summer courses that are deemed essential to degree progress.

Student Success:

Students need and deserve solid academic advising and lab support services. Both contribute to our college goal of maintaining the highest graduation rate within Cal Poly, and the entire CSU system. Twelve percent of the CBF budget is devoted to our peer advisors and lab assistants. Our CBF committee has chosen several projects that enhance the quality of the experience you receive at Cal Poly. We have initiated a pilot ‘Leadership Workshop’ for sophomores, have built a new tutoring/career information ‘Student Success Center’ within the computer lab in room 300, and provide support for software used in economics, marketing, and finance classrooms. Copies of the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and SLO Tribune are available to all Orfalea College students daily. We also bring several distinguished speakers to our campus: so far this year we have welcomed Cheryl O’Leary, VP for Lockheed-Palmdale, Libby O’Connell, Senior Historian for A&E Network, and Gary McGraw, CTO of Cigital Corporation, and an expert on on-line games.

We are committed to efficient and effective use of every budget dollar, and we apply this same philosophy to College-Based Fees.
